Glutamine is an essential amino acid and considered to be the most important when the body is under stress or recovering from trauma. It has been found that glutamine may enhance immunity and promote recovery in muscles, amongst other health giving benefits. It is being used as a supplement by bodybuilders who want to build new muscle or to preserve already hard earned muscle.
Glutamine is vital in the human body to support the immune system, to help with liver function, and for gastrointestinal integrity, to name a few of its benefits. Low levels of plasma glutamine are associated with loss of lean body mass, muscle, and intense exercise is reputed to reduce glutamine stores. It may also be useful to know that the use of glutamine may help to prevent over training syndrome (OTS) in athletes who train too hard and for too long.
It is also beneficial when it comes to replenishing glycogen stores in muscle after intensive exercise. Most bodybuilders will know that glycogen is stored in muscles for energy and other functions, including cell volume. It is not known exactly how glutamine improves glycogen storage, but many believe that the glutamine itself is being converted into glucose and then being stored as glycogen in the muscles. As a supplement, glutamine is seen as being beneficial as a general health improver.
